Liberation Medicine

A longitudinal, resident led curriculum exploring and understanding the forces that shape healthcare in our communities, by integrating social science literature and centering non-physician voices.

Unique goals of the curriculum:

  • Understanding the history of the South Bronx, its people, and engaging with those who are working to liberate their communities

  • Practicing Critical reflection to understand how we ourselves, our institution and profession perpetuate oppression to better understand what liberation could look like

  • Developing a critical analysis of the currents underlying disparities grounded in the social sciences

  • Highlighting the work of community members who are doing liberatory work

  • Defining what a liberated health system would look like and applying these ideals to our clinic

  • Encouraging residents to work actively with community members and practice listening and facilitation skills
